Hong Kong update

I’ve been here for awhile now, almost two weeks, and I’m having a ball. I like Hong Kong more than Shanghai, even though it is more expensive, because I can speak the language here—it’s so much easier when I actually know what people are saying around me. I’ve been shopping nonstop and found last night a boxed set of the Chinese TV series I was obsessed with as a child—“The Return of the Condor.” Can’t wait to waste away my life watching all 50+ episodes!

The food here is absolutely amazing. I am addicted to Hainan chicken, roast goose and rice, noodles with giant meatballs, and of course Beard Papa cream puffs. I can eat really well for as little as HK$25 a day, which is slightly more than US$3.00. Of course what I save on food I more than make up on shopping. Amazingly I seem to have lost a little weight, despite stuffing my face every day. Must be the oppressive heat and humidity—I’m soaked in sweat by the end of every afternoon.

The mosquitoes seem to have taken quite an attraction to me, as I am one big festering itchy sore right now. Cortisone can only do so much when half your thigh is a giant pink welt.

I got astoundingly drunk Friday and got my wallet stolen. I woke up on Saturday morning with a pretty badly injured foot (which I had sprained from falling whilst drunk), missing wallet and HK$600-700, no ATM card, pounding headache, and a bunch of pictures of drunken me on people’s cameras that I have no memory of taking. Seems to happen every time I travel—at least I took care of it early on! J

I got my fortune told at Temple street. The fortuneteller told me I will marry late in life, have 2 kids (daughter, then son), live pretty long. Called me impatient and impetuous, and told me not to drive so fast. Also I am warned against playing tennis. Made no mention of the previous fortuneteller’s prediction that I will outlive my first husband.
